The government is working to create a level-playing field in trade by identifying unnecessary regulations and reviewing trade-related rules, Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin said on Monday.

“We will establish justice and create a level-playing field, through which our trade volume and economic capacity will increase,” he told the ninth meeting of the National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC), held at the BIAM Foundation in Dhaka.

The adviser stressed that an efficient trade regime would not only boost economic growth but also ensure equitable distribution of wealth.

“We definitely want to curb tax evasion, but at the same time, we want to develop skills,” he added.

Highlighting government initiatives, Bashir Uddin said automation of customs activities was underway, which would simplify import and export procedures.

Senior officials including National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman, Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) Chairman Dr Moinul Khan, National Skills Development Authority Executive Chairman Nazneen Kawshar Chowdhury, FBCCI Administrator Md Hafizur Rahman, Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) Vice Chairman Md Abdur Rahim Khan and Additional Commerce Secretary Ayesha Akter also attended the meeting.
