The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to launch a new software platform to make online tax-return filing easier by allowing authorised representatives to submit returns on behalf of taxpayers.
The Tax Representative Management System (TRMS)—developed in-house by NBR’s income-tax officials and IT programmers—will enable tax lawyers and income tax practitioners (ITPs) to prepare and submit returns with taxpayers’ consent.
Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed will inaugurate the platform on Sunday at the NBR headquarters in Dhaka.
Calling the initiative a “significant milestone,” NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan said the system is designed to speed up the filing process while ensuring compliance. “Tax lawyers already have experience in filing returns, so they are well-positioned to help taxpayers,” he noted.
To use TRMS, authorised persons must register with the system. Each return will be stored under the representative’s name for accountability. Taxpayers can also approve submissions by sharing one-time passwords (OTPs) sent to their mobile phones linked to the NBR’s biometric system.
The revenue authority will train taxpayers to use the platform and has emphasised that only vetted professionals—approved through a rigorous selection process—will be allowed to file returns on others’ behalf.
Authorised representatives can access and retrieve submitted returns at any time through the system, ensuring a transparent record of filings.
