Chittagong Port hikes tariffs, traders brace for higher costs

Users warn of pressure on trade and consumers

The Chittagong Port Authority has increased tariffs across several service sectors, drawing concern from port users who fear the move will push up trade costs and consumer prices.

The revised rates, effective from Monday, come with an average 41 percent hike—far above the 10–15 percent adjustment requested by port users. Under the new structure, handling a 20-foot container will cost an additional Tk 4,400.

Port users argue the sudden increase will hurt traders and eventually burden consumers. However, the port authority defended the decision, saying the revision was necessary after years without a significant adjustment.
