Calls for stronger audit independence, better budget practices

The United States has outlined eight key steps for Bangladesh to strengthen transparency in its financial sector, according to the 2025 Fiscal Transparency Report released by the US State Department on Friday.

The recommendations include timely publication of fiscal and audit reports, aligning budgets with global standards, ensuring openness in revenues, expenditures and procurement, strengthening the independence of the audit institution, and disclosing information on natural resource extraction.

The report noted that Bangladesh’s interim government has maintained the budgetary framework of the previous administration while initiating reforms aimed at improving fiscal transparency.

“The prior government made its executive budget proposal and enacted the budget publicly available, including online. It did not make its end-of-year report publicly available within a reasonable period,” the report observed.
