The country’s capital market suffered a sharp setback on Sunday, with the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) recording its lowest turnover of the month as most shares closed in the red.
The benchmark DSEX lost 68 points, while the Shariah-based DSES and blue-chip DS30 dropped 19 and 23 points respectively. Turnover stood at Tk 6.21 billion, the weakest this month. Out of 396 issues traded, 307 declined, 39 advanced and 50 remained unchanged.
Large-cap stocks also faced heavy selling pressure. Among the A-category firms, only 24 gained, 173 declined and 22 were flat. The block market saw Tk 290 million worth of shares traded, led by Brac Bank, which offloaded Tk 150 million shares.
DBH First Mutual Fund was the day’s top gainer, advancing 5 per cent, while Trust Islami Life Insurance sank more than 9 per cent to become the worst loser.
The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) mirrored the downtrend, with the CASPI index shedding 138 points. Of 214 issues traded, 161 declined, 32 advanced and 21 remained unchanged. Turnover at the port city bourse rose slightly to Tk 140 million from Tk 120 million in the previous session. Sena Insurance PLC topped the gainer list, soaring over 9 per cent, while Usmania Glass Sheet Factory Ltd slid more than 10 per cent.
