Pakistan has invited Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Prof Muhammad Yunus, to visit Islamabad as the two countries look to strengthen their economic partnership and expand bilateral trade.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended the invitation during a meeting with Prof Yunus on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday (local time).

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters after the meeting that discussions focused on boosting economic cooperation and identifying opportunities for collaboration in trade and investment.

Condolences for Pakistan flood victims

At the outset of the meeting, Prof Yunus conveyed his condolences to the victims of the recent devastating floods in Pakistan. Prime Minister Sharif said the catastrophe was the result of climate change and other contributing factors, underscoring the need for greater regional cooperation on resilience and disaster preparedness.

Renewed commitment to bilateral relations

In August this year, Bangladesh and Pakistan reaffirmed their intent to deepen ties for the mutual benefit of their peoples. Dhaka emphasised building collaborative relations with Islamabad rooted in respect, understanding, and shared interests.

The New York meeting further reinforced that commitment, with both leaders agreeing to explore concrete measures to expand trade volumes and enhance economic links.

National Security Adviser Dr Khalilur Rahman was present at the meeting, alongside senior officials from both sides.
