BGMEA Urges BB to Release Export Incentives Before Eid

Garment factories face liquidity crunch as wages and bonuses loom

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has urged Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur to release pending export incentive funds so factories can pay workers’ wages and bonuses ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr.

In a meeting at BB headquarters, BGMEA leaders highlighted that delays in disbursement—estimated at Tk5,700 crore for fiscal 2025-26—are creating severe liquidity pressures, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises. They also requested special loan facilities covering two months’ wages, repayable over 12 months with a three-month grace period.

The association proposed reintroducing Packing Credit loans at 7% interest, expanding the Pre-Shipment Credit Scheme fund to Tk10,000 crore, and extending its tenure to 2030.

BGMEA leaders said disruptions from public holidays and declining global demand have worsened financial strains, making timely wage payments a major challenge. “Swift policy action is essential to protect the sector, its workers, and the broader economy,” the association said.

The meeting included BGMEA Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan and Vice President Md Shehab Udduza Chowdhury.
