Online income tax return submissions have crossed 4.15 million, as a growing number of taxpayers continue to seek deadline extensions.
In a statement on Sunday, the National Board of Revenue said the time-extension facility has received a “massive response” from taxpayers.
Mandatory e-filing drives surge
From the 2025–26 tax year, online filing has been made mandatory for most individual taxpayers, pushing registrations on the e-return platform beyond 5 million.
So far, more than 4.15 million taxpayers have successfully filed their returns online.
Extension requests pile up
Despite multiple deadline extensions, requests for additional time are rising. The current deadline for filing returns has been set for March 31.
Taxpayers can apply for up to 90 extra days through the online system, with over 5,000 আবেদন submitted in recent days—most of which have been approved.
Simplified digital process
The tax authority has introduced an online mechanism to make extension আবেদন and approvals faster and more transparent.
Applications are processed digitally by tax commissioners of respective regions, allowing taxpayers to file returns within the extended period without penalties or additional tax if approved.
अंतिम deadline nears
Officials have urged taxpayers yet to file returns to apply for extensions by March 31 to avoid penalties.
The strong response to both e-filing and extension requests highlights a shift toward digital compliance, though many taxpayers are still seeking more time to meet obligations.
