Deep Drilling Starts at Titas

New well expected to add 15mmcfd, boost domestic gas supply

Bangladesh has begun drilling its first deep exploration well at the Titas Gas Field, in a move aimed at increasing domestic gas supply and easing energy shortages.

The project, launched in Brahmanbaria on Sunday by AKM Mizanur Rahman, is expected to add around 15 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) to the national grid once completed.

Operated by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited, the Titas field currently produces about 325 mmcfd from 22 wells. However, output has declined over time due to falling reserves and pressure.

To tap deeper reserves, the company conducted a 3D seismic survey, which identified new potential at greater depths. The ongoing project will drill down to 5,600 metres—significantly deeper than conventional wells in the area.

The drilling is being carried out by Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Company Limited and is expected to take about seven months.

Officials described the initiative as a key step toward strengthening energy security. “This is a milestone. If successful, it can significantly ease the fuel crisis,” said BGFCL Managing Director Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik.

Petrobangla also plans to drill up to 50 wells this year as part of a broader strategy to boost domestic gas output amid global energy uncertainty.
