The government has reconstituted the board of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, appointing a high-profile mix of policymakers, business leaders and experts to address longstanding management and performance issues.
Rumee A. Hossain, a sponsor director of Bank Asia, has been named chairman, according to a notification issued by the Civil Aviation and Tourism Ministry on Saturday.
He takes charge after the position remained vacant for months following the resignation of the previous chairman.
The move is part of a broader effort to strengthen governance and improve operational efficiency at the national carrier, which has faced persistent financial strain, service concerns and management challenges in recent years.
The newly formed board includes senior government officials, military representatives and private-sector figures. Among them are finance and aviation secretaries, senior armed forces officials, corporate leaders and policy experts, alongside Biman’s managing director, who will serve ex-officio.
Officials say the diverse composition is intended to bring stronger oversight and a more coordinated approach to decision-making.
“As the national carrier, Biman plays a critical role in maintaining international connectivity and representing the country globally,” an official said, underscoring the importance of reforms.
The overhaul comes at a time when the airline is under pressure to improve efficiency, enhance service quality and restore financial stability.
