The government has announced a comprehensive plan to modernise Chattogram Port, focusing on technology, infrastructure and automation to increase capacity and improve operational efficiency.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman unveiled the programme in parliament on Wednesday in a written reply to a question from lawmaker Sarwar Jamal Nizam. The session was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal.
The prime minister said the port has maintained uninterrupted 24/7 operations despite global economic challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring the smooth movement of Bangladesh’s imports and exports.
He said the port’s cargo handling capacity has expanded significantly over the past 15 years. Cargo throughput rose from 45.4 million tonnes in 2010 to 138.15 million tonnes in 2025, while container handling increased from 1.34 million TEUs to 3.41 million TEUs over the same period.
Compared with 2024, cargo handling grew 4.7 per cent and container handling 10.5 per cent in 2025.
To support future trade growth, the government is implementing several major infrastructure projects. Operations have already started at the Patenga Container Terminal (PCT), while construction of the Laldia Container Terminal is underway. Regular capital and maintenance dredging is also continuing to ensure navigability.
The government is also accelerating the digitisation of port services.
“The government has placed particular emphasis on digitising port management to improve efficiency and service delivery. As part of these efforts, the port has introduced an online Port Community System, e-Delivery Order, e-Payment facilities and various automation initiatives.”
Security has also been strengthened in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The port has introduced online payment services, an e-Gate Pass system for vehicle entry, the CPA SKY system and the Port Single Window as part of its transition to a paperless operating environment.
The government is also moving towards full automation of port operations.
To strengthen cargo and container handling capacity, initiatives have been taken in FY26 to procure new equipment.
“Work orders have already been issued for the procurement of three five-tonne forklifts, while tenders for two empty-container handling forklifts and two 10-tonne forklifts are currently under evaluation.”
The prime minister said the government would continue investing in infrastructure, technology and modern equipment to improve the efficiency and capacity of the country’s principal seaport.
He expressed confidence that the initiatives would accelerate Bangladesh’s import and export activities and enhance the country’s competitiveness in global trade.
