The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has introduced a tax rebate of up to 5 per cent for individual taxpayers who submit their income tax returns by September 30, seeking to encourage voluntary compliance and timely filing.
Under the Income Tax Act, 2023, individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) filing returns between July 1 and September 30 will receive a rebate equal to 5 per cent of their tax payable, capped at Tk 25,000.
No rebate will be available for returns filed between October 1 and December 31.
The NBR has also imposed additional tax on late filers. Taxpayers submitting returns between January 1 and March 31 will have to pay an extra 2 per cent of the tax payable or Tk 3,000, whichever is higher.
For returns filed between April 1 and June 30, the additional tax will rise to 5 per cent of the tax payable or Tk 5,000, whichever is higher.
In a statement, the NBR said the incentive is intended to encourage taxpayers to file returns early, strengthen voluntary tax compliance and improve the efficiency of tax administration.
The revenue authority also reminded taxpayers that its e-Return service for the 2026-27 tax year has been available since July 22. Returns can be submitted through the e-Tax portal, with tax payments accepted via bank transfer, debit and credit cards, as well as mobile financial services including bKash, Nagad and Rocket.
Taxpayers will receive instant acknowledgement receipts and income tax certificates after successfully filing accurate returns online. The NBR said assistance is available through its call centre and other digital platforms during office hours on working days.
The revenue board urged taxpayers to submit their returns by September 30 to qualify for the rebate and avoid additional tax.
