Shipping and Labour Affairs Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain has stated that the government has recommended assigning the Bangladesh Navy to operate the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chittagong Port for a period of six months.
He made the remarks to journalists on Wednesday (2 July) following a meeting at the Secretariat regarding the management of Chattogram Port.
Adviser Sakhawat Hossain noted that discussions are ongoing about handing over terminal operations to foreign entities. However, he assured that the government would not take any decision that harms the country. “Ports in many countries are operated by foreign companies. But the idea that foreigners will take over our port is baseless,” he said.
He further commented, “The interim government has not come to sell the country. It is here for a short time. A new government will take over soon—if the country is sold off now, what will they be left with?”
Expressing frustration over the recent protests by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), the adviser questioned, “Who gave them the authority to hold the system hostage?” He voiced support for disciplinary action.
