Dr. Mohammad Akhtar Hossain has been appointed as the Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank. He has been given a two-year contractual appointment by the central bank.
On Monday (July 14), Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and Executive Director Arif Hossain confirmed the development.
He stated that Dr. Akhtar Hossain’s appointment is contractual, and all terms of his employment will be governed by the agreement signed with Bangladesh Bank.
The Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank primarily advises the Governor and the Board of Directors on matters related to the country’s economy, monetary policy, and banking sector stability.
Previously, in 2019, after Dr. Faisal Ahmed stepped down from the position of Chief Economist, Executive Director of the Research Department Md. Habibur Rahman was given the additional charge. Later, on February 13, 2022, he was appointed to the position on a full-time basis.
However, on February 28, 2024, when Habibur Rahman was appointed as a Deputy Governor, the Chief Economist position became vacant. After a gap of nearly five months, Dr. Akhtar Hossain has now been formally appointed to this important post.
