8 NBR Officials Suspended for Defying Transfer Orders and Misconduct

Written by The Banking Post

The government has suspended eight officials of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for refusing to comply with transfer orders and allegedly tearing up official letters in public — an act described by authorities as “defiant and unbecoming.”

The disciplinary move follows recent high-profile actions within the revenue authority, including the forced retirement of four senior officials and the suspension of the Chattogram Custom House commissioner, all taken in the public interest.

In separate notifications issued today, the suspensions were made effective immediately.

🔹 Names of Suspended Officials

Joint Commissioners of Taxes:

  • Masuma Khatun
  • Murad Ahmed
  • Mohammad Morshed Uddin Khan
  • Monalisa Shahreen Sushmita
  • Md Ashraful Alam Prodhan

Deputy Commissioners of Taxes:

  • Mohammad Shihabul Islam
  • Nushrat Jahan Shomi
  • Imam Tauhid Hasan Shakil

According to the official notification, the eight officers not only disobeyed the June 22 transfer orders, but also publicly expressed solidarity with other officials who had taken similar actions. Some of them were reported to have torn up the orders in public, which the NBR termed as arrogant behavior and a clear breach of civil service discipline.

In response, the NBR has initiated departmental proceedings and formal investigations against all eight.

During their suspension, the officials will serve as Officers on Special Duty (OSD) at the NBR headquarters and will receive subsistence allowances in accordance with government regulations.

🔹 Corruption Probes and Broader Crackdown

The suspensions come amid a broader clean-up effort within the NBR. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is currently investigating 16 NBR officials over alleged corruption in three phases.

Most of the suspended officials were reportedly active supporters of the NBR Reform Unity Council, which recently staged nationwide protests on June 28 and 29, disrupting export and import activities.

The council’s demands included:

  • Removal of the NBR chairman
  • Inclusion of representatives in the tax reform panel
  • An end to so-called “vengeful transfers”

Authorities say the latest action is part of a continued effort to restore discipline, professionalism, and integrity within the tax administration system.
