The bank statement claiming money was given to celebrities for an August 15 post is fake

Written by The Banking Post

A copy of a bank statement has been circulating since yesterday afternoon, claiming that actress Meher Afroze Shawon sent 20,000 taka each to nine people from her so-called Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) account between August 13 and 14 (the statement even mentions three accounts receiving 400 taka extra). Many people have shared the image, claiming that the money was sent to make a post about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15.

Fact-check:
Rumor Scanner’s investigation has found that the bank statement copy is fake. In reality, the 13-digit account mentioned in the statement does not exist. Verification of the bank’s standard statement shows that beneficiary names or account numbers are never listed. Moreover, the fake statement appears to have been created using an online fake template.

During the investigation, Rumor Scanner identified several inconsistencies:

  1. Non-existent account: The 13-digit account number (1223767545676) mentioned in the statement was verified with multiple account holders of the bank. Rumor Scanner confirmed that no account exists under this number, which was also corroborated by a bank official.
  2. Incorrect beneficiary details: The statement lists the names of beneficiary accounts and even multiple names in brackets, which is unusual. Standard statements from the bank do not mention beneficiary names or account numbers.
  3. Fake template: Similar templates with different bank logos are widely available online. The circulating statement appears to have been created using one of these fake templates.

In conclusion, the image of the bank statement is definitely fake.

Therefore, the claim that actress Shawon gave money to celebrities for a Facebook post about Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, based on this bank statement, is false.
