BRICS’ potential note not released from Putin’s X account; circulated image is a symbolic note

Written by The Banking Post

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly released an image of a potential BRICS currency. The image was said to be posted on Putin’s X account… Asia, Africa, and South America—the three continents—will begin joining BRICS, and global transactions will take place in dollars, euros, and these BRICS currencies. The note also reportedly shows Bangladesh’s flag, described as a sole contribution of Sheikh Hasina. Multiple images claiming to show the BRICS potential currency have circulated on various internet platforms with this caption.

Fact-check
According to an investigation by the Rumor Scanner team, the note circulating as a potential BRICS currency is actually a commemorative or sample note, and there is no post on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s X account referring to it as a potential BRICS note.

At the start of the investigation, no posts supporting the claim about the note were found on Putin’s official X account. The last post on the account was on March 16, 2022.

Regarding the circulated note, the investigation found a report published on the Russian online media outlet Lenta.RU on October 23, 2024. The report included an image showing a note similar to the circulated one.

The report shows Vladimir Putin holding a note with a denomination of “50,” which matches the circulated note. The report states that in October 2024, at the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russian President Vladimir Putin was presented with a “symbolic banknote” by the intergovernmental organization, representing joint work among BRICS member countries.

The report further mentions that prior to the Kazan BRICS summit, Putin told the heads of media from member countries in a meeting that creating a single BRICS currency would happen too soon. According to him, the matter is not yet mature and there is no need to rush.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov also stated that currently there are no plans to create a single BRICS currency. At the same time, he mentioned that alternative financial settlement and payment systems are being considered.

On this subject, a report published on the Russian state media Rossiyskaya Gazeta website on October 24, 2024, also contains the same image and information.

The report further explains that the idea of creating a commemorative note came from Yevgeny Fedorov, director of Kyrzakh Printing House. The idea originated several years ago, and in 2023, ahead of the BRICS summit in Johannesburg, this type of note with a denomination of 100 BRICS units was published for the first time.

Therefore, the claim that an image of a potential BRICS note was released from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s X handle is false.
