Capital alone accounts for over 40% of expatriate earnings; northern districts lag far behind
Bangladesh received $2.47 billion in remittances in July, the first month of the FY26 fiscal year, with the bulk of the inflow concentrated in Dhaka.
According to Bangladesh Bank’s latest data, the Dhaka division alone attracted $1.384 billion, more than half of the total. Within the division, Dhaka district topped the chart, pulling in $1.027 billion, the highest among all districts. Tangail ($43 million) and Narayanganj ($40.5 million) followed. Rajbari, however, recorded the lowest inflow in the division at just $8.9 million.
Chattogram division stood second with $598 million, led by Chattogram district ($165 million) and Cumilla ($123 million). At the bottom were the hill districts of Rangamati and Bandarban, each contributing only $1.7 million.
Sylhet, traditionally a major source of remittances, sent $195 million, with Sylhet district alone accounting for more than half ($102 million).
Other divisions contributed smaller shares:

- Khulna: $95 million, led by Jashore ($18.2 million).
- Rajshahi: $77 million, led by Bogura ($15.6 million) and Pabna ($15.1 million).
- Barishal: $67 million, with Barishal district sending $24 million.
- Mymensingh: $42 million, led by Mymensingh district ($21 million).
- Rangpur: $31.9 million, with Gaibandha ($8.6 million) on top. Lalmonirhat recorded the lowest in the country—just $1.3 million.
Analysts said the inflow concentration in Dhaka and Chattogram reflects the higher overseas employment from these regions, while northern districts continue to trail due to limited migration opportunities.
