The first scheduled meeting on the proposed merger of five Islami banks was called off on Sunday after Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur fell ill.
The meeting was to be held between the governor and the board of Exim Bank as part of the central bank’s efforts to merge Exim Bank, Social Islami Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Union Bank, and Global Bank into a single entity.
Although Exim Bank’s chairman and directors arrived at the central bank, the discussion did not take place.
“Governor sir is ill, so he did not come to the Bangladesh Bank today. There was no meeting,” said Exim Bank Chairman Nazrul Islam Swapan.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson and executive director Arief Hossain Khan also confirmed the cancellation.
The central bank plans to hold individual meetings with the boards of the five banks, where they will present their financial positions to the governor. The chairmen, directors, and managing directors are expected to attend.
“We have asked to be informed when the governor recovers. We will come for a meeting with the governor sir then,” Swapan added.
