After day-long tension, govt forms 4-member body to probe BFIU Head Shahinul's viral video

After day-long speculation over punitive action against Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) head AFM Shahinul Islam, the government finally formed a four-member team to investigate into over controversial viral video.

The Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the ministry of finance made its additional secretary Md Sayeed Kutub, additional secretary as the convener of the team. Other members of probe team are executive director of Bangladesh Bank (BB) Md. Sirajul Islam, director (ICT-2) of the BB Md. Matiur Rahman and FID joint secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam.

In an office order, the FID asked the committee to submit its findings within the next seven working days.

Simultaneously, the central bank in another press note said that the BFIU head has been asked to be on leave for the interest of the investigation in accordance with the instruction of the government.

Earlier on Tuesday last, the BB governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur sent the BFIU head on mandatory leave following the video scandal. But the BFIU head attended the office on the following day (Wednesday) defying the order.

And it triggered speculation among the BB officials that the BFIU boss being influenced by somebody else joined the office. Due to this situation, there was some tension observed among central bank staff. Under the leadership of BB’s Additional Director Nazrul Islam, about 10-20 officials were seen gathering in front of the central bank. They, however, did not stage any protest.
