Bangladesh Eyes $2b Business Gain from Tariff Edge: Zahid Hussain

Former World Bank economist says stability must be backed by reforms

Bangladesh could secure an additional $2 billion in business, mainly diverted from China and India, thanks to tariff advantages offered by the Trump administration, economist Zahid Hussain said on Friday.

Speaking at the Moazzem Hossain commemorative lecture organised by the Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) in Dhaka, the former lead economist of the World Bank’s Dhaka office said the country’s economy is showing relative stability compared to last year as key indicators improve.

“However, stability does not guarantee sustainability if proper actions are not taken,” Hussain cautioned, stressing the need for reforms to lock in gains from external advantages like tariff preferences.
