Bangladesh has been ranked 106th among 139 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025, released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
Although the country remains in the lower tier, its position has improved compared to 2020 when it was 116th. In 2022, Bangladesh stood at 102nd.
The index measures innovation performance based on 80 indicators, including human capital, research, infrastructure, market sophistication, and knowledge outputs. Bangladesh’s overall innovation score this year is 21.0 points, placing it in the lower-middle-income group, alongside Pakistan (99th) and Nepal (107th).
Despite the modest ranking, the report highlighted Bangladesh among the fastest-growing economies in terms of productivity over the past decade. From 2014 to 2024, the country recorded an average productivity growth of 4.5%, higher than India’s 4.3%. The report stressed that such rapid growth is significant for large-population countries as it contributes to global development and poverty reduction.
Bangladesh showed relative strengths in infrastructure (90th), creative outputs (86th), and market sophistication (96th). However, its weakest areas remain human capital and research (133rd) and business sophistication (129th).
Globally, Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, South Korea, and Singapore retained the top positions, while Niger, Angola, Congo, Venezuela, and Mali ranked at the bottom.
