In a move to facilitate the international business operations of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), Bangladesh Bank has issued a circular on October 05, 2025 allowing SMEs to remit up to 3,000 US dollar or equivalent annually for legitimate current expenses abroad.
According to the central bank, the remittances can be made either through traditional banking channels or via international cards. To avail this facility, SMEs need to be be duly registered with the SME Foundation.
In a notable feature, banks have been permitted to issue refillable international cards—termed as ‘SME Cards’—to a nominated official of the enterprise. Each SME Card may be initially loaded with up to USD 600 or equivalent for online payments related to bonafide current expenses. However, the total annual limit for an SME, combining both card usage and direct remittances through banks, shall not exceed USD 3,000.
As per business insiders, it will allow SMEs to carry out payments more easily and without hassle.
