The government has postponed the recently announced increase in Chattogram Port fees by one month following widespread objections from port users and traders.
Shipping Adviser M Sakhawat Hussain confirmed the decision on Saturday after discussions with the port authority. “We have agreed to push it back by one month,” he said, adding that the deferment takes effect immediately.
The port authority had raised charges by up to 41% across various services through a notice issued on September 14, which came into effect the next day. The steep hike drew sharp criticism from port users, who argued it would ultimately raise costs for consumers.
Traders had earlier proposed a more modest increase of 10% to 15%, saying the sudden hike was excessive and would disrupt business operations.
