Sheikh Mohammad Maroof, Managing Director (MD) of Dhaka Bank, has resigned citing personal reasons. He submitted his resignation letter to the bank’s Chairman, Abdul Hai Sarker, on Thursday. The matter became known from relevant sources on Sunday (17 August).
Sheikh Mohammad Maroof joined Dhaka Bank as MD in October 2024. Prior to that, he served as Additional MD of The City Bank.
Commenting on the resignation, Chairman Abdul Hai Sarker said, “He failed to comply with several regulations of Bangladesh Bank. We have received his resignation letter. A decision will be made on the matter at the board meeting on Monday.”
Earlier this month, within just a week, three bank MDs resigned. Among them, the MD of Southeast Bank had already been sent on leave. In addition, the MDs of Meghna Bank and Commerce Bank suddenly stepped down.
According to Bangladesh Bank regulations, when an MD resigns, the central bank must be informed of the reason. Thereafter, Bangladesh Bank decides whether the resignation will be effective or not. There have even been instances in the past where a resigned MD was reinstated.
