The timeline for the upcoming board election of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), the apex body of Bangladeshi businesspeople, has been extended by 45 days. This extension follows a decision by the Ministry of Commerce. As a result, the previously announced voting date of 7 September 2025 has become uncertain. The Election Board has stated that a new schedule will be announced soon.
This information was shared in a notice signed by Md. Abdur Razzak, Chairman of the FBCCI Election Board and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, on Monday (1 July).
According to the notice, “In light of the decision taken by the Ministry of Commerce on 1 July, the deadline for organizing the FBCCI Board of Directors election for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 terms has been extended by 45 days.”
This has caused a temporary standstill in the previously announced election activities. However, the Election Board has assured stakeholders that the election will be held on time according to the new schedule.
The board also confirmed that all relevant parties have been informed of the extension, and the process of announcing the revised schedule will be completed soon.
Candidate and Voter Preparations
For the first time in FBCCI history, the president, senior vice-president, and vice-presidents were to be elected directly by vote. Various business groups had already been busy finalizing candidates, planning campaign strategies, and managing voter outreach. However, many believe the sudden extension has disrupted their preparations.
Why Was the Time Extended?
Sources indicate several administrative and technical reasons behind the extension. These include updating the voter list, verifying information from member organizations, ensuring fair voting procedures, and properly scrutinizing candidate nominations.
Not the First Delay
This is not the first time the FBCCI election has been delayed. In the past, elections have been postponed due to administrative or legal complications. However, this time the election is set to be held under the new Trade Organization Act and updated constitution—something members have long awaited.
What’s Next?
Despite the extension, interest in the election remains high among the business community. Various groups are continuing their campaign preparations. Once the new schedule is announced, a vibrant election campaign is expected to kick off.
