The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has announced that foreign nationals working in Bangladesh are not required to submit their income tax returns online.

The information came through a special order signed by NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan on Monday (August 11).

Earlier, the government made online filing of tax returns mandatory for all taxpayers except four categories of individuals. On August 4, Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the e-return submission process for the 2025–26 tax year.

On the very first day of the launch, taxpayers responded enthusiastically, with 10,202 people submitting their income tax returns online.

According to NBR, when online return submission began last year on September 9, 2024, a total of 2,344 taxpayers filed their e-returns on the first day. Compared to that, the first day of the 2025–26 tax year saw nearly five times more submissions.

In the previous fiscal year, about 1.7 million people filed their returns online.

Online return submission has been made mandatory nationwide for all categories of individual taxpayers, except for senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged or special needs taxpayers, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, and legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers.

However, if any taxpayer is unable to file an online return due to registration issues in the e-return system, they may submit a paper return by October 31, with specific justification, subject to approval by the relevant Additional/Joint Tax Commissioner upon application to the concerned Deputy Tax Commissioner.

The NBR’s public relations office stated that taxpayers can pay their taxes from home using bank transfers, debit cards, credit cards, bKash, Rocket, Nagad, or other mobile financial service apps, instantly print the acknowledgment of e-return submission, and automatically generate and print their tax certificate by providing the required information.

Additionally, if any issues arise during online filing, dedicated NBR staff are providing round-the-clock assistance through call centers and other electronic communication channels for immediate resolution.
