Workers of Posh Garments blocked a key road in Dhaka’s Tejgaon area on Saturday after finding their factory closed without prior notice.
Police said employees gathered at the Tibet intersection around 10am and soon took to the streets, halting traffic between Mohakhali and Saat Rasta. By 11am, they had barricaded both sides of the Mohakhali-Tejgaon road, leaving commuters stranded for hours.
The factory, Posh Garments Ltd., was reportedly shut on Thursday, 21 August, sparking anger among workers who claimed the owners violated labour rules.
“Authorities must either reopen the factory or follow the proper legal process for closure. Otherwise, we will continue our protest,” said one worker during the demonstration.
Police officials said negotiations were held with the factory owner and labour representatives. Workers were assured that a meeting would be arranged later on Sunday to discuss their demands. Following the assurance, the blockade was lifted around 1:45pm, restoring traffic in the area.
