Govt to Purchase 40.44 Million Primary School Books for Tk 2.01 Billion

Tk 2.01 billion allocated for 40.44 million primary textbooks in 2026 academic year; govt also clears bulk carrier purchase and dredging project work.

The government has approved the procurement of 40,444,491 textbooks for students of grades one, two, and three at the primary level for the 2026 academic year. The total expenditure will amount to Tk 2,009,178,480.

The approval was granted on Tuesday (August 12) at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase, chaired by Economic Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, at the Cabinet Division’s conference room in the Secretariat.

Meeting sources said that, in response to a proposal from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the government approved the purchase proposal for printing, binding, and supplying textbooks for 96 out of 98 lots for grades one to three in the 2026 academic year.

These 96 lots comprise a total of 40,444,491 copies of textbooks, costing Tk 2,009,178,480.

In the same meeting, in response to a proposal from the Ministry of Shipping, approval was given for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation to purchase two bulk carrier vessels with capacities between 55,000–66,000 DWT, using its own funds. The total cost will be Tk 9,357,156,000, and the ships will be purchased from the USA.

Alongside the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase meeting, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs also met under the chairmanship of the Economic Adviser. The committee approved the implementation of remaining works under packages BRWTP-W2-01, BRWTP-W3-01, and BRWTP-W1-02 of the “Bangladesh Regional Inland Water Transport Project-1 (Dredging of Chattogram–Dhaka–Ashuganj and Connected Routes and Construction of Terminal-Related Facilities) (2nd Revised)” by the BIWTA, funded by the World Bank, through government procurement procedures.
