NBR Tightens Grip on Tax Evaders

Field offices told to boost intelligence operations and fast-track recovery of unpaid taxes

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched a nationwide drive to crack down on tax evasion, directing its field offices to intensify intelligence and investigation efforts to trace undeclared income and recover unpaid taxes.

In a new directive issued by its Tax Audit and Intelligence Cell, the NBR ordered each tax region to form dedicated investigation teams tasked with identifying irregularities and initiating recovery actions.

The teams will investigate cases based on intelligence reports, public allegations, media disclosures, and inconsistencies in tax filings. Officials will also review suspicious patterns, such as unusually high tax-free income or a sharp rise in net assets compared to declared taxable income.

If investigators uncover credible evidence of tax evasion, their reports will be reviewed by a regional intelligence committee for approval before legal recovery measures begin.

Each tax office must also submit monthly updates to the NBR, detailing new investigation findings, additional claims, and recovered revenues, by the 10th of the following month.

According to the NBR, the initiative aims to curb tax evasion, enhance revenue collection, and promote a fair and transparent tax culture across the country.
