NBR uncovers over 1,300 undeclared luxury cars in tax probe

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has uncovered over 1,300 luxury cars — including BMW, Mercedes, Porsche and Rolls-Royce — missing from owners’ tax files, in a move that could net more than Tk1,000 crore in unpaid taxes.

A probe by the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) found that 409 car owners failed to file any tax returns, while others concealed information despite registering their vehicles with the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).

Officials said the undeclared fleet spans top brands such as Toyota, Land Rover, Audi, Jaguar, Bentley, Tesla, Ferrari and Lamborghini, with individual values ranging from Tk1 crore to Tk10 crore, including duties and taxes.

The list includes businesspeople, politicians, government officials and their families, as well as corporate houses.

“These owners did not declare their vehicles in tax files, effectively concealing income equivalent to the purchase value, which may indicate illicit earnings,” said Ahsan Habib, director general of the CIC.

The CIC has asked field offices to initiate legal action against the tax dodgers. So far, it has identified 5,489 high-value cars nationwide, of which 2,719 were declared. Authorities will also reopen 148 declared cases after finding discrepancies.

The probe, which gathered BRTA data spanning five fiscal years up to February 2025, was aimed at tracking wealthy individuals hiding assets to evade taxes.
