Md Omar Faruk Khan Appointed as New MD of Islami Bank

Md. Omar Farooq Khan has been appointed as the Managing Director (MD) of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC. Previously, he had been serving as the Acting MD. Omar Farooq Khan will serve as the MD until July 30, 2028, when he reaches the age of 65. This information was confirmed in a letter issued by the central bank yesterday, Sunday.

According to sources, Md. Omar Farooq Khan appeared for an interview at Bangladesh Bank on July 24. Following the necessary procedures, the regulatory authority finalized his appointment. In September last year, Omar Farooq Khan joined Islami Bank as an Additional Managing Director (AMD). Before that, he served as the Acting Managing Director of NRB Bank Limited. He has 37 years of extensive experience in the banking sector. At Islami Bank, he has played key leadership roles in one of its largest operational units — the International Banking Wing — as well as at the local office, various divisions, zone offices, and branches.

According to available information, after obtaining his master’s degree in Sociology from the University of Dhaka, Md. Omar Farooq Khan began his career at Islami Bank in 1986. To enhance his professional expertise, he participated in various international banking and credit management training programs held in Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, Malaysia, and India.

It is worth mentioning that Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC, established in 1983, is the first Shariah-based scheduled commercial bank in South and Southeast Asia. Stakeholders expressed hope that the appointment of Md. Farooq Khan as the new MD will bring fresh momentum to the bank’s operations.
