Onion imports resume through Benapole after 2.5 years

Written by The Banking Post

Onion imports through Benapole land port have resumed after two and a half years, with the first consignment of 15 metric tonnes arriving from India on Monday night.

Port officials confirmed the shipment was cleared following quality checks at the Plant Quarantine Centre. Customs authorities said they expedited formalities to ensure swift release.

The consignment was imported by SM Well Traders of Bagerhat and exported by India’s National Trading Corporation. Customs data show each tonne was imported at Tk37,429, with retail prices expected at Tk58–60 per kg in local markets.

Onion imports through Benapole had been suspended since March 2023 to protect local growers. But as prices surged in recent weeks, the government reopened imports to stabilise the market.
