“Spreading overall crime statistics of the country as solely statistics of persecution of Hindus.”

Written by The Banking Post

Recently, a screenshot of a Bangladeshi media report headline translated into English was circulated on the social media platform X. The headline reads:

“2,616 murders in 8 months, 15,000 cases of abuse against women and children: Interim Government.”

While sharing, the caption stated:

“They finally admitted it – what is happening against Hindus in Bangladesh. #SaveBangladeshiHindus”

The post presented these statistics as information about violence specifically targeting the Hindu community.

Fact-Check: Crime Statistics Misrepresented as Anti-Hindu Violence

An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the widely circulated statistics actually reflect overall crime in Bangladesh from 2020 to August 2025, not crimes against any specific community or Hindus.

The posts claiming that “2,616 murders in 8 months, 15,000 cases of abuse against women and children: Interim Government” targeted Hindus were based on an English translation of a report published on the website of Independent TV, a private Bangladeshi television channel.

The original report stated:

“In the first eight months of the year, 2,616 murders and 15,049 cases of abuse against women and children occurred, according to the interim government. The report presents a comparative overview of crimes committed from September 9, 2020, to August 2025, based on data from the interim government’s Press Wing.”

The report further explained that while the murder rate appeared high in the last 13 months of the interim government, a partial reason was that at least 1,130 murder cases from Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year tenure were filed after August 6, 2024, due to prior political pressure and threats. Many cases could not be filed earlier, and the police were discouraged from registering them. Following the change in government, these cases were recorded, contributing to the reported figures.

Similar statistics were reported by other media outlets, confirming that the numbers represent the overall crime situation in the country, not targeted violence against Hindus.

Additionally, the official Facebook page of the Chief Adviser, Government of Bangladesh (Chief Adviser GOB) posted the same statistics, explicitly clarifying that they cover crimes from 2020 to August 2025 and provide a comparative overview.

Conclusion:
The circulated posts misrepresent general crime statistics as evidence of violence against the Hindu community. Presenting these numbers as such is misleading and false.
