Written by The Banking Post

Fact Check: Prothom Alo Did Not Publish Any Such News

Recently, a screenshot has been circulating on social media claiming that Prothom Alo published a report titled “Major Layoffs Planned at Islamic Bank”. The report stated that on August 29, 2025, Islamic Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) would conduct an internal exam and that at least 6,000 officers could lose their jobs based on its results.

However, Rumor Scanner’s investigation found that mainstream media outlet Prothom Alo has never published such a report. The screenshot was fabricated using Prothom Alo’s logo and circulated on Facebook as a fake report.

What the Verification Found

  • The reported article does not include any publication date.
  • No such news was found on Prothom Alo’s website, Facebook page, or YouTube channel.
  • The font and layout of the circulated report differ significantly from Prothom Alo’s authentic publications.

There is, however, some genuine information regarding the bank’s exam. A video report by Khaborer Kagoj notes that on August 14, senior officials of Islamic Bank issued a letter notifying staff about a “Conduct of Special Competence Assessment for Employees of the Bank”. The exam is scheduled for August 29, and it is mentioned in the video that some employees may face termination based on performance in the assessment.

Conclusion

In short, Prothom Alo did not publish any report on mass layoffs at Islamic Bank. Therefore, the social media post claiming “Major Layoffs Planned at Islamic Bank” in Prothom Alo’s name is fake and fabricated.
