AI-generated image shared in media claiming to show the Global Sumud Flotilla scene

Written by The Banking Post

In protest against Israel’s ongoing illegal blockade of Gaza, the Global Sumud Flotilla—a humanitarian maritime mission by international human rights activists carrying relief supplies—set sail from Barcelona, Spain, on August 31. Later, between September 13 and 15, additional vessels carrying aid joined the flotilla from Tunisia, Italy’s Sicily Island, and Greece’s Syros Island.

Following this, several local media outlets recently published reports on the Sumud Flotilla, featuring an image claimed to show the flotilla scene.

Fact-check
Rumor Scanner team’s investigation found that the image circulated with the claim of showing the Sumud Flotilla scene is not genuine. In fact, the discussed image was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and was published in the media without any warning or disclaimer.

Upon further investigation through reverse image search, a post related to the Sumud Flotilla was found on an Instagram account with the username cybertechweb, posted on September 3.

Upon reviewing the post, it was found that the image circulated in local media claiming to show the Sumud Flotilla matches the one used in that Instagram post. However, on closer inspection, a Google Gemini AI watermark can be seen in the bottom-right corner of the image.

Further investigation revealed that on August 26, Google DeepMind unveiled an advanced image-editing model called “Nano Banana,” which is currently accessible through Google’s AI assistant, Gemini. The model allows users to edit images in advanced and creative ways.

Later, to verify whether the discussed image was indeed AI-generated, it was tested on the AI content detection platform Deepfake-O-Meter, which indicated a 99.75% probability that the image was created using artificial intelligence.

In other words, it has been confirmed that the discussed image was created using Google’s AI assistant, Gemini.

It is noteworthy that several local media outlets used this image—without any AI warning or source attribution—as a feature image in their reports and as thumbnails on YouTube and Facebook. Therefore, those reports have also been considered as part of the claim in this fact-check.

Conclusion:
An AI-generated image created using Google Gemini is being circulated in the media with the false claim of showing the Sumud Flotilla fleet. The claim is completely false.
