Bangladesh has not received any new communication regarding the United States’ latest tariff measures, but the government is closely monitoring the situation, Commerce Minister Khandker Abdul Muktadir said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, he explained that implementing the U.S. tariff agreement involves multiple processes. “The tariff issue is still evolving. A recent court ruling has created a new situation beyond the framework of the original agreement,” he said.
He added that a non-disclosure agreement with the U.S. makes the matter sensitive. Previously, tariffs were 19% country-specific; now a 10% tariff applies to all countries.
On domestic markets, the minister noted that imported goods help the government regulate prices. Lemon prices initially spiked ahead of Ramadan but fell after three days.
Regarding the TCB truck incident, he called it regrettable and stressed that those involved must ensure such incidents do not recur. He also pledged action over extortion, emphasizing results over assurances.
