Bangladesh has secured a new export market as Vietnam officially approved the import of potatoes from the country, marking a breakthrough for its agricultural trade.
The approval was granted on Friday by Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, allowing Bangladeshi exporters to begin shipments from March 27.
Months-long process pays off
Under Vietnamese regulations, exporting countries must undergo a rigorous registration and verification process before gaining market access.
The process for Bangladesh began in May 2025, led by the Bangladesh Embassy in Hanoi in coordination with the commerce, agriculture and food ministries. After months of review, the approval has now been finalised.
Boost for farmers, exporters
Ambassador Md. Lutfor Rahman said the move will open up significant opportunities for exporters while benefiting local potato farmers.
“Vietnam has strong demand for potatoes. This will help expand our exports and reduce the trade imbalance,” he said.
Path opens for more exports
Officials believe the নতুন market access could pave the way for exporting other agricultural products to Vietnam, including sesame and similar plant-based goods.
The embassy in Hanoi has indicated it will continue efforts to widen market access for Bangladeshi products.
The development signals growing trade ties between the two countries, with agriculture emerging as a key area of cooperation.
