RMG Sector Moves to Review Building Code

Committee formed to align BNBC with global safety standards

Written by The Banking Post

Bangladesh’s garment exporters have launched a formal review of building regulations, forming a high-level committee to address concerns over factory compliance and safety standards.

The initiative, led by the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, will examine key provisions of the Bangladesh National Building Code—particularly those affecting factory design and layout.

Industry leaders say the move aims to resolve inconsistencies and bring local rules closer to global benchmarks such as the International Building Code and guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association.

Headed by a senior industry figure and supported by technical experts, the committee will review conflicting interpretations of the code that manufacturers often face during safety audits. It is also tasked with developing a unified industry position and recommending necessary revisions.

The push gained momentum after exporters flagged practical challenges in complying with certain provisions—particularly rules around factory dining facilities. A recent complaint from a garment manufacturer brought the issue into focus, prompting wider industry action.

Officials expect the committee’s recommendations to clarify regulatory requirements while ensuring continued compliance with internationally accepted safety standards.
