Bangladesh’s per-capita income has risen to $2,769, as the government sets an ambitious লক্ষ্য of transforming the economy into a $1 trillion powerhouse by 2034.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury disclosed the figure in parliament, citing latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. He said the বৃদ্ধি reflects steady economic progress, even as authorities push for faster growth through structural reforms and targeted investments.

“The government is prioritising a broad-based development strategy focused on investment, employment generation, economic democratisation, as well as the expansion of the creative and sports economies,” he told the House.

To sustain income growth, the government is placing strong emphasis on job creation across key sectors, including manufacturing, construction, information technology and agro-processing. Efforts are also under way to improve the business climate by simplifying regulations and encouraging private-sector investment.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been identified as a key pillar of the strategy. The government plans to expand access to finance for women and young entrepreneurs while strengthening market linkages to boost grassroots economic activity.

On the external front, policymakers are working to diversify exports and explore new markets to strengthen foreign exchange earnings. At the same time, steps are being taken to enhance the skills of overseas workers and channel remittances through formal systems.

The announcement came during a session of the Jatiya Sangsad, underscoring the government’s long-term vision to sustain growth momentum and elevate Bangladesh’s position in the global economy.
