12 July 2025 — The government is set to launch a Tk 7,340 crore flood control project in Feni district to construct durable embankments along the Muhuri, Kohua, and Silonia rivers, in a move to mitigate future flood risks and protect critical infrastructure and livelihoods.

Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Adviser Faruk-E-Azam made the announcement today during his visit to flood-affected areas in Fulgazi upazila. He confirmed that the project will be implemented through the Bangladesh Army, emphasizing the need for precision, engineering excellence, and strong oversight.

“This will not be an ordinary initiative. It’s a high-impact, technically complex project that requires flawless execution and top-grade embankments,” said the adviser.

Strengthening Infrastructure Amid Climate Threats

Faruk-E-Azam acknowledged that the existing embankments are inadequate for handling large-scale floods, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. The proposed project, he said, aims to deliver long-term resilience for flood-prone communities across the region.

“Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but we can certainly reduce the damage through strong infrastructure. This embankment project alone will require around Tk 7,000 crore and will take time to complete,” he added.

Local Demands for Permanent Protection

During his visit to flood shelters at Ali Azam High School and Azmiri Begum Girls High School, residents raised concerns over delayed relief efforts and alleged irregularities by local officials. They also urged the government to build a sustainable 122-kilometre embankment system along the three rivers.

The adviser later inspected river erosion along the Muhuri River at Dakkhin Sripur Purbopara.

Flood Damage Snapshot

Although the floodwaters are beginning to recede, large areas in Chhagalnaiya, Feni Sadar, and Daganbhuiyan remain submerged, affecting over 40,000 people across 30 villages.

  • Over 1,000 fish enclosures and ponds have been damaged
  • Around 1,655 hectares of Aman seedbeds affected
  • Livestock losses in Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya are estimated at Tk 6.49 crore

The massive infrastructure project is expected to play a vital role in securing Bangladesh’s flood-prone zones and reducing economic losses across agriculture, aquaculture, and livestock sectors.
