Market Capitalisation Soars by Tk 652 Billion Amid Eight-Week Rally on DSE

Written by The Banking Post

Despite a sluggish start, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) ended the week on a high note, extending its upward momentum for the eighth consecutive week, with total market capitalisation increasing by Tk 652.39 billion during this period.

In the week ended Thursday, large-cap stocks led the rally, offsetting the broader decline in share prices. Although only 140 companies posted gains compared to 222 losers, the rise in heavyweight stocks pushed both the key index and market capitalisation upward.

At the end of the week, the DSE’s market capitalisation stood at Tk 7.12 trillion, up from Tk 7.08 trillion the previous week—reflecting a weekly gain of Tk 42.16 billion, or 0.60%.

Recovery Continues Since Eid-ul-Azha
This sustained recovery follows a prolonged eight-week slump after Eid-ul-Fitr, during which the DSE lost Tk 268.82 billion in market cap and the benchmark DSEX fell by 582 points. However, from the week before Eid-ul-Azha, the market reversed course, showing steady improvement.

In the seven weeks preceding last week, the DSE added Tk 610.23 billion in market capitalisation, bringing the total eight-week gain to Tk 652.39 billion. The surge reflects a significant increase in the share and unit prices of listed companies.

Indices Show Broad Strength
The DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, rose by 51.38 points (0.95%) last week, adding to a seven-week gain of 753 points. Overall, the index has gained 804 points during the eight-week rally.

The DS30 Index, which comprises blue-chip stocks, also climbed 24.58 points (1.18%) last week, extending its seven-week gain of 360 points to a total increase of 384 points.

However, the Shariah Index (DSES) experienced a minor dip, falling 2.08 points (0.18%), despite a previous seven-week increase of 161.33 points.

Turnover Declines Slightly
While indices and market cap advanced, trading activity slowed. Average daily turnover stood at Tk 838.86 crore, down from Tk 859.44 crore in the previous week—a decline of 2.40% or Tk 20.58 crore per day.
