Written by The Banking Post

Shares in Bangladesh surged after news broke that Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur is being replaced. The announcement reversed an earlier downward trend in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), with key indices turning positive within minutes.

Most of Wednesday’s trading had seen the benchmark index in the red, and even 15 minutes before closing, losses persisted. Rumors of a new governor appointment lifted investor sentiment, prompting a surge in buying.

According to Ministry of Finance sources, a new governor is being appointed, potentially an academic from a U.S. university. A formal proposal has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office for approval, and the appointment could be finalized today.

By the close, 154 companies recorded price gains, 167 saw declines, and 72 remained unchanged. The DSEX index rose 12 points to 5,554, DSE Shariah Index added 4 points to 1,105, and DSE-30 increased 8 points to 2,151. Trading volume, however, fell to BDT 565.47 crore from BDT 824.89 crore the previous session.

Top traded shares included City Bank, BRAC Bank, and Bank Asia, while other active companies were Robi, Progati Life Insurance, Orion Infusion, K&Q, Eastern Bank, Summit Alliance Port, and BD Thai Food. On the Chittagong Stock Exchange, CASPI rose 13 points with mixed price movements across 177 companies.
