The Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday clarified the withdrawal limits for depositors of five banks currently in the process of merging, dismissing reports that withdrawals would begin from a specific date.
The central bank said arrangements are being made to allow depositors to withdraw up to Tk200,000, based on their needs. However, no date or timeline has yet been finalised for when the facility will start.
“The process to allow depositors of these five banks to withdraw a maximum of Tk200,000 based on their requirements will commence shortly,” said Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan in a message.
The clarification came after claims circulated on social media and some news platforms that depositors of one of the merging banks could start withdrawing funds from Monday. The central bank said the information was incorrect and without basis.
Bangladesh Bank urged depositors and the public not to be misled by unverified reports and to rely only on official announcements regarding the merger process and withdrawal arrangements.
