The transformation of Cox’s Bazar Airport into an international gateway is in its final phase, with full readiness expected within the next few months.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam told Parliament that key upgrades have been completed, while remaining work is now focused on testing and commissioning.

She said the airport has already secured certification from the International Civil Aviation Organization after meeting required international standards and operational criteria.

As part of the upgrade, the runway has been extended from 9,000 feet to 10,700 feet towards the sea, enabling large aircraft to land and take off at full capacity.

A new international terminal—spanning nearly 18,000 square metres—has also been built, equipped with modern facilities to handle global passenger traffic.

“The terminal is now undergoing testing and commissioning,” the minister said, indicating that commercial international operations could begin once final preparations are complete.

The government expects the upgraded airport to boost tourism and connectivity, positioning Cox’s Bazar as a key regional travel hub.
