The government has moved to build Bangladesh’s first cable-stayed bridge over the Karnaphuli River, marking a major step toward improving connectivity in the Chattogram hill tracts.
The proposed bridge will be constructed at the Chandraghona-Raikhali ferry point, linking Kaptai Upazila with Rangunia Upazila. Officials say the project will replace the existing ferry service and ensure uninterrupted road communication.
The Roads and Highways Department has already completed the design and submitted the Development Project Proposal (DPP). A project verification committee approved the plan earlier this month.
The main bridge will span 532 metres, accompanied by a 455-metre viaduct and a 511-metre elevated road to ensure smooth access. The total project cost is estimated at Tk 16.59 billion.
Officials said construction will begin after approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). If cleared, work is expected to start in July 2026 and be completed by June 2031.
“The project aims to establish a safe, efficient, and uninterrupted road network linking Rangamati and Bandarban,” said an official.
The bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time and transport costs along the Rangamati–Bandarban corridor, while also boosting tourism and economic activity in the region.
Local stakeholders described the initiative as long overdue, expressing hope that it will transform connectivity and improve livelihoods across the hill districts.
