NBR rolls out FY27 e-return system

Online filing opens with up to Tk 25,000 tax rebate for returns submitted by September

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Wednesday launched its online income tax return filing system for the 2026-27 tax year, allowing taxpayers to submit returns through the e-Tax platform from July 22 without visiting tax offices.

The move is part of the NBR’s ongoing effort to modernise tax administration. E-return filing is now mandatory for almost all individual taxpayers.

According to the revenue authority, the online system has gained strong acceptance since its launch in 2021. Nearly 4.7 million individual taxpayers filed their returns electronically in the 2025-26 tax year, the highest number so far.

However, paper returns will still be allowed for certain categories of taxpayers, including senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged or specially abled persons with relevant certificates, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, legal representatives of deceased taxpayers and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.

Taxpayers facing technical difficulties in registering with the e-return system may also submit paper returns with prior approval from the respective Additional or Joint Commissioner of Taxes.

Through the e-Tax platform, taxpayers can pay taxes online using bank transfers, debit and credit cards, as well as mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket and Nagad. Acknowledgement receipts and tax certificates will be issued instantly after successful submission.

The NBR has also introduced an incentive to encourage early filing. Individual taxpayers who submit their returns between July and September will receive a tax rebate equal to 5 per cent of their net tax payable, subject to a maximum of Tk 25,000.

The rebate will not apply to returns filed after September. Additional tax will be imposed on returns submitted after December.

To assist taxpayers, the NBR has arranged support through its call centre (09643717171) and other electronic channels during office hours on working days.

The revenue authority urged taxpayers to file their returns within the stipulated timeframe to avail themselves of the rebate and avoid additional tax liabilities.
