The first budget session of the 13th Parliament began on Sunday, paving the way for the presentation of the national budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year later this week.
The session started at 3:00 pm with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, presiding over the House.
On the opening day, Parliament adopted a condolence motion expressing grief over the deaths of 16 former ministers and lawmakers, including Tofail Ahmed. The House also paid tribute to noted educationist Prof Dilara Hafiz, the Speaker’s wife, eight-year-old Ramisa Akter, who was raped and murdered, and several other distinguished personalities.
Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury is scheduled to place the proposed FY2026-27 national budget in Parliament on June 11.
The upcoming budget will be the first presented by the BNP-led government, which assumed office after the national election held on February 12, 2026.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin had summoned the session on May 7.
The inaugural session of the 13th Parliament concluded on April 30 after 25 working days, during which lawmakers passed 94 bills.
