The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) extended its winning streak into a third consecutive session yesterday, with the benchmark index ending higher despite a notable sell-off in banking shares.
The key index, DSEX, rose 18.42 points, or 0.34%, to close at 5,419, adding 105 points over the last three trading sessions. Market capitalisation expanded by around Tk 6,000 crore during the day.
The blue-chip DS30 advanced 0.28% to 2,101.84, while the Shariah-compliant DSES gained 1.02% to 1,184.53. Turnover surged 22% to Tk 976 crore, signalling fresh investor enthusiasm. Market breadth was strongly positive, with 242 gainers, 94 losers, and 46 unchanged.
Sector-wise, engineering stocks led the charge with a 2% rise, followed by pharmaceuticals (+1.18%), non-bank financial institutions (+0.92%), fuel and power (+0.62%), and food and allied (+0.56%). Telecommunications edged up 0.25%.
In contrast, the banking sector dropped 1.39%, dragging down several financial stocks as investors booked profits after recent rallies.
“Renewed buying interest in large-cap sectors helped offset weakness in banks,” said BRAC EPL Securities in its daily review. EBL Securities added that mid-session profit-taking briefly slowed the rally, but buyers quickly regained control, pushing indices higher.
Pharma stocks dominated trading, accounting for 19.9% of total turnover, followed by banks (12.4%) and textiles (11.1%).
Among the day’s top turnover leaders were Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, City Bank, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Orion Infusion, and Techno Drugs.
On the gainers’ list, National Tea (+9.98%), Sonali Paper (+9.97%), ACI Formulations (+9.95%), Bangladesh Autocars (+9.92%), and Information Services (+9.86%) stood out.
The worst performers included First Security Islami Bank (-5.40%), Mercantile Bank, Trust Islami Life Insurance, Rahim Textile, and ICB Employees Provident Mutual Fund.
The upbeat mood also spread to the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), where the CSCX gained 37 points to 9,307 and the CASPI added 61 points to 15,158, with turnover reaching Tk 18.78 crore.
