The government has appointed Md Mostaqur Rahman as the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, removing Ahsan H. Mansur from the post. The decision was announced on February 25 through separate gazette notifications issued by the Financial Institutions Division of the Ministry of Finance. Following this, various media outlets published reports on the matter. At that time, a photo was also attached and circulated, claiming it to be that of the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman.

Such reports were published by: Ekattor TV, Independent TV (Facebook), Bangladesh Television (Facebook), SA TV (Facebook), Ittefaq, Inqilab, Dhaka Prokash (Facebook), Barta Bazar, NewsBangla24, Naya Shatabdi (Facebook), Dhaka Times, Shomoyer Alo, BD Today, Bahann News, Sonali News, Sangbad, Bhorer Barta24, Delta Times, NewsNow24, Shobar Desh, VOD Bangla, Khola Kagoj, Jonotar Kontho, Kaler Shomaj, CNI, Uttoradhikar71 News, Techzoom.tv, Dainik Punorutthan, Prottichhobi, Campus24, Doa News, Dainik Barta, Amar Bangla, Rising Cumilla, Sabah and Stock Bangladesh.
Some other media outlets later removed or deleted the reports along with the attached photo. These include: Ekhon TV, Desh TV, Channel24 (YouTube), Desh Rupantor, Dhaka Mail, Khoborer Kagoj, Barta24 and Shomoyer Konthoshor.

Additionally, several media outlets claimed that the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman had been promoted from Additional Director to Director of Bangladesh Bank in 2024.
Fact-check
An investigation by the Rumor Scanner team found that the photo attached in the above-mentioned reports, claiming to show the new Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Md Mostaqur Rahman, does not belong to the newly appointed Governor. In fact, the image is of another individual named Md Mostaqur Rahman who serves as a Director at Bangladesh Bank.
The claim that the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman previously held the position of Director at Bangladesh Bank is also incorrect.
In this regard, a press release dated February 26 was found on the verified Facebook page of Bangladesh Bank regarding the joining of the new Governor. The release included the official photo of the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman. A comparison between that image and the one circulated in the media clearly shows they are two different individuals. Additionally, the LinkedIn profile of the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman was found, which also contains the same image as in the official press release of Bangladesh Bank.

Further investigation into the individual whose photo was circulated in the media as that of the new Governor shows that his image appears on the Bangladesh Bank website. There, he is identified as Md Mostaqur Rahman and described as a Director of Bangladesh Bank. Moreover, a report published on May 30, 2024, on the website of the mainstream media outlet Samakal also features the same individual whose image was recently circulated in the media as that of the new Governor. The report at that time stated: “Md Mostaqur Rahman has been appointed Director of Bangladesh Bank. Previously, he served as Additional Director of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU)… After completing his BBA and MBA in Finance from the University of Dhaka, Mostaqur Rahman joined Bangladesh Bank as an Assistant Director in 1999.”
In addition, some media outlets claimed that the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman was promoted from Additional Director to Director of Bangladesh Bank in 2024. However, no such information is mentioned in the press release issued by Bangladesh Bank regarding his appointment and profile. His LinkedIn profile also does not mention that he previously served as a Director at Bangladesh Bank.
Analysis of the information and evidence makes it clear that there is indeed another Director at Bangladesh Bank named Md Mostaqur Rahman who was promoted in 2024. Some media outlets mistakenly identified that individual as the new Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman and published his photo and promotion-related information as that of the newly appointed Governor.
On the other hand, the newly appointed Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman has never previously served as a Director at Bangladesh Bank. Rather, he is a businessman and has been engaged in business activities.
Therefore, the photo of another individual named Md Mostaqur Rahman who serves as a Director at Bangladesh Bank, along with information regarding that individual’s promotion, has been circulated in the media as that of the newly appointed Governor, which is misleading.
